Additional Information

My name is Susan F. Heywood and I've lived in Phoenix, Arizona since 1990. My involvement with Online commerce began more than a decade ago and currently includes several entrepreneurial and freelance projects. Additionally, I'm currently a facilitator of marketing classes in the MBA and undergraduate programs at UOP Online and the author of numerous articles about the Web and marketing on it.

You're invited to visit my DirectMarketingMBA.com Marketing Blog (www.directmarketingmba.com/blog) to read some of my work. You can also learn more about my background, including my teaching philosphy by visiting Resume.SusanHeywood.com and by Google searching "Susan F. Heywood."

Until recently, I was a Business Development Manager with Insight, a Fortune 1000 company that sells several billion dollars worth of computer products each year. I've been involved with the online world since the early 90's, so I'm especially excited to be facilitating UOP Online program.

I started with Insight as Public Relations Manager in 1995. Because of Insight's early adoption of Web marketing and sales, I was fortunate enough to participate in the "dot com" days of the late 90's at a company that never lost sight of the importance of profitability, and was able to secure coverage of Insight in national publications and media such as Inc., CNN, Forbes, and Fortune (Insight was named a Fortune "Cool Company" in 1998.) My responsibilities also included internal communications, and I was part of the team that set up Insight's first intranet. I also worked on the team that promoted the first Insight.com Bowl - the first post-season, intercollegiate football game named for a dot com company (and I believe the only one still around!)

In addition to numerous press releases, you can find examples of my freelance work and quotes in computer and business publications online. I began covering the Web in 1996 as a contributing editor of Computer Buyer Magazine in Phoenix and wrote two columns per month, including Web Wanderings for the publication until recently. In 1998 I was awarded a Copper Anvil award in the category of feature writing by the Phoenix Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America for a cover story profile on Insight entitled "Winning the Electronic Commerce Game" that I wrote for "Electronic Commerce World Magazine. My writing has also been published in other vertical publications including DM News, Direct and Event Solutions and numerous newsletters, most recently MyEZSale.com.

In 1999, I moved into a Marketing Manager position at Insight, with an emphasis on developing co-marketing relationships with companies that targeted the same market of small- to medium-sized businesses. These marketing programs enabled Insight and its partners to successfully acquire new customers and drive sales without spending money on advertising. In my business development position, I worked with manufacturer partners as well as groups, systems integrators and co-marketing partners to implement direct marketing programs that drive customer benefit, sales and customer acquisition for both Insight and the partner.

My Web marketing experience is solidly grounded in the off-line world. Prior to joining Insight, I worked in various sales and marketing capacities for two software development companies, an insurance company and a direct mail advertising company here in the Valley. Before I moved to Phoenix in 1990, I was co-founder and Vice President of RapidMail, Inc. in Davenport, Iowa.

A business partner and I actually started RapidMail, which is a full-service direct mail marketing company and mailing list broker, as part of my graduate course work at St. Ambrose University in 1988 and the company is still in business today. Before starting RapidMail, I had worked for a public utility company, now called Midamerican Energy, for five years, and worked my way through college and graduate school in various customer service positions (starting here in high school!) so I understand what it's like to balance getting your degree with working!

As far as other teaching experience, at Insight, I was fortunate to not only participate in online learning, but also to work with partners and internal contacts to develop relevant online training materials. I have also been a classroom instructor for internal training at Insight, as well as for community college classes in Iowa. In a volunteer capacity, I've served as a Sunday school teacher and Junior Achievement classroom volunteer.

I'm married with no children. My husband, Mike, and I do have three cats we spoil too much, Wiley, Mercury and Mrs. Dorothy Parker (aka Meeper). My hobbies include reading, antiquing, working on a novel, fixing up our circa 1961 house and selling miscellaneous items on eBay , ePier, and through my Web storefronts.
